All clerical positions require a TABE test with a minimum score of 11.0. Please attach a copy of your results to your application. TABE Tests are good for two years. If you have a Bachelor’s Degree or higher, you do not have to have a TABE Test.

Captain of Training – FT $48,871 – Fire Rescue

Performs duties of a Safety Officer nature and participates directly in the work of the Public Safety Director.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepares training outlines/lesson plans and instructs various assigned courses

  • Conducts training exercises in both classroom and field settings

  • Prepares study materials for use, formulates, and administers tests for Department personnel

  • Performs duties consistent with those assigned to Lieutenant/Paramedic as required.

  • Supervises personnel assigned to fire safety inspection and plans review activities.

  • Reviews building plans to minimum fire code requirements.

  • Investigates complaints regarding potential fire hazards and takes corrective action as required.

  • Responds to questions about fire safety goals, philosophies, and design concepts.

  • Related assignments under both emergency and non-emergency conditions, as directed by the Public Safety Director

    Requirements:

  • Knowledge of modern firefighting, rescue and hazardous materials principles, practices, and procedures.

  • High School Diploma or acceptable equivalency

  • Graduation from an accredited two-year college or university with a degree in Fire Science, Emergency Management, Emergency Medical Services, Public Safety, Business Administration, Public Administration, or  other field of study that relates.

  • Internal Candidates must have three years of fire service experience with Okeechobee County Fire Rescue at the rank of Lieutenant.

  • External Candidates must have ten years of fire service experience in a department similar in size to Okeechobee County Fire Rescue and five years at the rank of Lieutenant.

    Required Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations:

  • Valid Florida Driver’s License

  • Florida State Firefighter’s Certification

  • Florida State Certified Paramedic

  • Florida State Fire Officer I Certification (Fire Officer II preferred)

  • Florida State Certified Fire Safety Inspector I

  • Florida State Certified Fire Instructor I (Must obtain Fire Instructor II within 18 months)

  • American Heart Association Basic CPR Instructor (must obtain within 6 months)

  • American Heart Association ACLS Instructor (must obtain within 6 months)

  • State of Florida Safety Officer Certification (must obtain within 18 months)

  • Life Fire Training Instructor (must obtain within 12 months)
