Native wildlife and vegetation flourish in this natural sub-tropical habitat.  Nature lovers and birders alike describe Okeechobee as ideal for observing rare and endangered species including the Snail Kite, Purple Gallinule, Limpkin, and others. Some other special birds that are truly a prize for any birdwatcher include the Crested Caracara, Sandhill cranes, mottled ducks and one of Florida's most endangered birds the Florida Grasshopper Sparrow common to the Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park. The birdwatching opportunities abound in this outdoor paradise try walking the Taylor Creek Stormwater Treatment Area and the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail that circles Lake Okeechobee.

Looking to take your visit to another level? Try airboating!  An airboat,is a flat-bottomed watercraft propelled by an aircraft-type propeller and powered by either an aircraft or automotive engine.  They are commonly used for fishing, bowfishing, hunting, and ecotourism. Airboats are a very popular means of transportation in marshy and/or shallow areas where a standard inboard or outboard engine with a submerged propeller would be impractical, such as grass filled trails and thickets in Lake Okeechobee. There is no more exciting way to experience nature than to get up close and personal with our many gators, birds and other wildlife that make Lake Okeechobee their home.  Interested in taking a tour contact some of our local tour guides Eagle Bay Airboat Tours, Gator Hunt Airboat Rides, and Florida Airboat Charters.

Winding down from the airboat or looking to get off your feet for a while?  How about a relaxing horseback ride through Okeechobee's lush trails.  Feel the strength of a horse under saddle as you or your group experience the rocking of a horse's stride and the beauty of natural Florida around you with an experienced guide from Wagon Wheel Horse Farm

Come and Explore Okeechobee, a nature lovers dream.
