Why pitch a humble tent when there is an array of comfortable holiday homes on offer in and around Okeechobee? Family-friendly travel has never been so affordable, and there is indeed an impressive selection of vacation rentals to peruse on trusted sites like Airbnb.

Not only is a vacation rental better value for money if you’ve covered a great distance, but consider the benefits of having everything already set up for you - groceries readily available from local supermarkets and farmers’ markets, no need to bring anything but your own luggage, and plenty of time to take in the scenery as you silently gloat at the campers struggling with mundane operational struggles and escapee awnings.

Okeechobee tends to put a spark in the imagination with glimpses into real lakeside relaxation and family-friendly hours filled with laughter in the sunshine. Whether you’re settled into one of the rustic lakeside cabins, with only the sounds of waterbirds for company or sliding into a more sophisticated milieu within reach of a review-worthy meal, you’ll find it all here in dynamic Okeechobee, Florida.

Let your ideas run wild, the perfect holiday home is only a click or two away.

A Farm, A Creek, and A Lake

Where children are, there is joy and enthusiasm, and homesteads are excellent places to spark the imagination of impressionable young minds. The squawks, bellows, grunts, and bleats of local four-legged residents sends younger spectators into a frenzy of delighted giggles and squeals. Farm life is awesome, especially when it is right on the doorstep of the ninth largest freshwater lake in the whole of the United States!

For a modern and comfortable stay alongside Lake Okeechobee, which also boasts the charms of rustic farm life, try this stunning furnished rental on CBC Farm. It is not titled a ‘Vacation Dream Home’ for nothing - and the fishing is fantastic. The critters will keep the young ‘uns occupied while the scenery and homeliness encapsulate much-needed rest in the responsible adults.

Allison’s home rental near Taylor Creek also offers exquisite decor with a plush interior and an excellent location for any avid fishermen. Her charming vacation rental is close to a range of amenities and attractions: downtown, the great lake, the glassy creek, and the best secret fishing spots. She encourages her guests to engage in eco-conscious living alongside modern convenience, riding the Okeechobee wave of environmental awareness.

There are a few rental options with creek frontage and calm ambiance, especially in the off-season. 2005 Waterfront Buckhead Ridge is a classic example, with 2 bedrooms, all utilities included, and a quaint deck over the water.

Homegrown Smiles

Part of the attraction to the Okeechobee region is the famed hospitality of the vacation rental hosts and agents. A smile goes a long way, and this slice of Florida has more than enough to go around. The Airbnb host community is growing from strength to strength as the popularity of home stays increases across the world.

There is an abundance of different vacation rental options here, from single garden rooms to lowly log cabins, to entire homes that can comfortably house large families (and their friends) in a comfortable and spacious home. A wide range of fees ensures all visitors can find the right price fit for a well-earned break from the rat race.

Take this ‘Sport Fishing Home’ on Airbnb, for example.  A stunning family home with canal access to the lake through Taylor Creek, it is exactly what we’d imagine for a comfortable family getaway with something for everyone. The convenience of home with the adventures of new discoveries, stunning fishing spots for Dad, and a friendly host, Debbie, who is happy to share the ins and outs of the Okeechobee district. Then there’s Irina’s cozy little one-bedroom rental, good for a maximum of four people with lake frontage and a tiny kitchenette.

Traditional Values

Perhaps you want a little more history in your time away, then head on over to the OK Corral Gun Club with 12 cabins to rent and a lot more ‘Old West’ than you would ever imagine this far south. On a farm north of Okeechobee town, The Gun Club is within easy reach of some of Okeechobee’s lesser-known attractions, like the Trading Post Flea Market, and Arnold’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, and also, obviously, the revered Okeechobee Battlefield State Park.

The Taylor Creek district is home to Mike and Marisol’s three-bedroomed vacation rental in the Brindaban Forest one-access community. A tastefully-furnished interior set amongst grand old oak trees, it’s a winner for couples or small groups looking for a quiet getaway within reach of all Okeechobee good points.

Nothing Fishy About It

Unsurprisingly, sport fishing is a huge pull to the freshwater lake region. The self-proclaimed “Speck” capital of the world, for its Speckled Perch offering, there is even an annual festival for speck enthusiasts to compete for the coveted title.

Being the largest body of fresh water for miles, Lake Okeechobee features as the primary attraction for Okeechobee county. Other smaller lakes offer some of the same benefits and are accessible for day trips, but it is recommended you take full advantage of the superior accommodation options closer to town (and still on the well-developed northern side of Lake Okeechobee). From rustic cabin rentals to room rentals to entire homes that are furnished and beautiful, Okeechobee caters to a wide range of holiday makers, and unforgettable Florida vacations.

The River Bluff Fishing Resort is one of many options for a holiday rental, featuring campsites, RV sites, and a few one to three-bedroom accommodations which can even be rented on a monthly basis.

Not at Loggerheads with the Environment

Zack’s stunning Lake Okeechobee Waterfront log Cabins are another example of great rental options close to town and still right on the edge of Lake Okeechobee. Well-maintained, professionally managed and situated in a secure community setting, it’s a wonderful place to kick off your shoes. Dangle your toes off the waterfront deck if you dare, as you watch the boats, wave to friendly fisherman, and take in the breathtaking diversity of the local ecosystem.

If you still want to feel like you are camping without having to bring anything with you, and with the distinct luxury of a ‘glamping’ experience, why not rent a fully-furnished mobile home right across the street from stunning Lake Okeechobee? Like Santiago’s charming furnished mobile home.

The spectacular part of all these beautiful lakeside offerings is their close proximity to Okeechobee. Need something in a hurry? Okeechobee’s downtown retailers are right up the road, and there is an abundance of great value eateries to give the family cook a sporting chance at a great vacation, too.

Something Different

Every location has its strong points, but Okeechobee sure has a lot of them. Depending on how far you have come, your perspective on convenience may vary, but a vacation rental always trumps having to pitch a tent and then take it down again. Walk in, feel at home, optimize your time, and leave when you’re ready.

There are some unique offerings on platforms like Airbnb, where hosts know the value of their accommodation and want to share  it. If you’re into minimalism, there are are compatible supporters of the Tiny House movement, like Gracious Tiny House Park, who are happy to climb aboard the less is more train. The Gracious Tiny House Park includes RV sites, too.

It isn’t many locations which can boast such a wide variety of features - a couple of beautiful lakes (about 27 smaller ones in the area), convenient proximity to shops, entertainment, and dining options, a short drive to the beach, fascinating national parks, unique wildlife, enviable bird lists, and a long list of activities to keep you on your toes when the time comes to roll off your lakeside picnic blanket.

Very Prairie

For a closer pick on The Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park, try pulling in for a week-long break at the Nuna Ranch Lodge, for instance. A rustic cabin tucked away right near the park, it is a glamping winner.  Balmy days under great big oak trees and night beside a crackling fire pit make this cattle ranch an unbelievable choice for a weekend away (and a much more romantic getaway than sleeping in the mud with the nightcrawlers, too).

Want something off the beaten track? Book a stay at the Bunkhouse Cabin on 7 acres of land. There’s not too much around, but you can paddleboard on the creek and sing songs late into the night without bothering the neighbors. Why not?

If you have a large group of friends (or a giant family), the Florida Prairie Nature Lover’s Retreat provides plenty of room for connection in a cedar-wood cabin with the capacity for twelve. If the 7 acres of land and central party house (called ‘the Roost’) don’t have you calling for a reservation, maybe the treehouse and private zip line will seal the deal.

Pack your bags, an Okeechobee adventure awaits!
